Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has raised concerns that telecommunications companies in the country may be attempting to undermine the upcoming protest against economic hardship.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Adegboruwa highlighted a rise in complaints about network restrictions as the protest date approaches. Scheduled to begin on August 1, the demonstration aims to address issues of hunger, poverty, and dissatisfaction with current economic policies.
Adegboruwa warned that attempts to sabotage the protest by restricting internet access among citizens are unacceptable.
He noted, “In recent days, some telecom companies have been disconnecting subscribers for trivial or unexplained reasons.”
The SAN criticised the timing of these disconnections, suggesting that they are intended to limit the reach of protestors and frustrate the planned demonstration. He emphasized that telecom contracts are binding and that subscribers should be given adequate time and information to address any issues.
Adegboruwa also urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to investigate the matter and ensure that subscribers’ rights are protected. Additionally, he has requested security agencies to provide protection for protesters.
