Major General Abubakar Mohammed, general officer, commanding(GOC), 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, has been relieved of his appointment and Brigadier-General M.Y Ibrahim, acting general officer commanding appointed to replace him.
This is barely 24 hours after he escaped being shot dead by rampaging soldiers during a troops parade at the Mailamari barracks in Maiduguri, Borno state
Until his appointment, General Ibrahim was one of the Army commanders battling insurgency in the north east.
His predecessor was said to have been flown into Abuja yesterday in a Nigerian Air force plane C-130, to answer questions on what could have led to mutiny under his command.
Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan will today, visit Chibok, a village in Borno State, north-east Nigeria, where over 200 schoolgirls were abducted about a month ago from Government Girls Secondary School, by Boko Haram insurgents.
This will be Jonathan’s first visit to Chibok, since the girls were abducted leading to growing international condemnation and effort to rescue the girls. It is expected that the president will from there proceed to Paris, France to attend a security summit with focus on Boko Haram activities.
Those expected in the meeting are Nigeria’s neighbours Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin, and officials from the US, Britain and the European Union to discuss a coordinated response to the growing capability of the sect.
