Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Vincent Rague and others join MTN Group
MTN Group has announced the appointments of His Royal Highness, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Emir of Kano, President John Kufuor, former President of Ghana to its Board of Directors effective July 2019.
The announced was made in a statement released by the company on Friday. According to the statement, the company established an International Advisory Board (IAB) that will regulate the business environment and competitive trading conditions of the company.
“The MTN Group Board is of the view that MTN has entered a more stable and settled period which enables it to now effect an evolution of the Board following recent challenging regulatory environments and competitive trading conditions.
“Further to the above, we are pleased to welcome onto the Board His Royal Highness Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and Vincent Rague with effect from 1 July 2019.
“The Board has resolved to establish an international advisory board (IAB) of prominent persons of considerable and wide-ranging experience.
“The primary purpose of the IAB will be to counsel, guide and support the MTN Group from time to time in fulfilling its vision and objective of being one of the premier African corporations with a global footprint in telecommunications, contributing to increased digital inclusion in Africa and the Middle East, a pivotal aspect of the fourth industrial revolution.
“Whilst the IAB will be non-statutory in nature and not have any fiduciary responsibility, it will make an important contribution and play a highly valued role in ensuring that the Board is guided and assisted in achieving the company’s vision in a technically complex world with uncertain and shifting geopolitical interests. The IAB will commence on 1 July 2019.”
The following have been announced as the IAB members:
1. His Excellency former President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr. Thabo Mbeki (Chair)
2. His Excellency President John Kufuor, former President of Ghana
3. Dr. Aisha Abdullahi, former African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs
4. Dr. Mohammed el Baradei, former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency
5. Dr. Momar Nguer, President of Marketing & Services Total S.A. (France)
6. Phuthuma Nhleko, Chairman of MTN Group MTN Group Chairman, Phuthuma Nhleko com
Here are the changes announced to leave the group over the next 12 months:
1. The Chairman of MTN Group, Phuthuma Nhleko, will step down from the Board on 15 December 2019.
2. Chairman-designate, Mcebisi Jonas, will assume the position of Chairman of MTN Group effective 15 December 2019.
3. Dr. Khotso Mokhele will assume the responsibilities of Lead Independent Director with effect from 15 December 2019.
4. Alan Harper, Jeff Van Rooyen and Koosum Kaylan will step down from the Board on 15 Dec 2019
5. Peter Mageza and Dawn Marole will step down from the Board effective 30 April 2020.
MTN Champs Season 3 Lagos Continental Relays concluded on April 12, 2025, with a vibrant closing ceremony at the Yabatech Sports Complex.
This event marked a historic moment in Nigerian athletics, featuring the debut of the Olympics-approved mixed relays and showcasing exceptional talent across various track and field events.
The final day was a blend of intense competition and entertainment, drawing families, friends, and MTN Nigeria staff to the stands. Guests enjoyed music, games, and the much-anticipated MTN Staff Relays, where teams from different departments competed for medals and bragging rights. The Innovators emerged victorious, clinching gold in both male and female categories.
MTN executives also joined the fun, participating in 50m sprints and emphasizing the importance of physical activity. Chief Human Resources Officer, Esther Akinnukawe, highlighted the company’s Go M.A.D (Make A Difference) campaign, encouraging individuals to stay active and impactful in their fields.
The Lagos Continental Relays attracted over 2,500 entries from 155 schools, with participants competing in four age categories: Cadet (U-14), Youth (U-17), Junior (U-20), and Senior. The event not only celebrated athletic excellence but also reinforced MTN’s commitment to nurturing future Olympians and building a legacy of sports development in Nigeria.
Season 3 of MTN Champs continues with the grand finale scheduled to take place in Uyo at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium from April 30 to May 3.

The collaboration, which began at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, focuses on optimizing application-aware networks and network-aware applications to deliver a seamless and high-quality user experience. By leveraging data analytics and conducting comprehensive testing, MTN and Meta have successfully developed solutions that enhance the interaction between mobile networks and real-time calling applications.
Nigeria, MTN’s largest market, was the first to implement these enhancements. Early results indicate a remarkable 50% improvement in key performance indicators (KPIs), significantly enhancing the user experience for MTN Nigeria mobile users.
“This implementation further demonstrates our commitment to enhancing our customers’ digital experience.
