The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) played host to governor Namadi Sambo of Kaduna State last Wednesday at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The Governor who was there to exchange ideas with Engr. Yomi Bolarinwa, NBC’s director general, as part of his state’s Communication Day activities, shared his vision of a new Kaduna city being planned to the East of the present city, which he explained would be a modern, well-planned city that could be equalled to any city in the world.
An architect by profession, the governor explained that Kaduna had a master-plan, which was never implemented, thus distorting its growth and development, informing that the new Kaduna city would take care of all that, and “create a city we could all be proud of.”
He appealed for the cooperation of the Commission, and the Nigerian broadcast media in order to achieve this dream.
In his response, the NBC boss thanked the governor immensely for the honour of the visit, and for sharing his vision with the Commission.
Bolarinwa suggested that a central tower should be included in the plan to carry all communication and broadcasting antennae in order to save the new city from the clutter of masts and towers making the skyline very ugly.
He briefed the governor on the Digitisation programme of the nation, explaining that the Nigerian target date of 2012 was firmly in sight, adding that following president Yar’Adua’s approval, a Presidential Advisory Committee had been set up, which had completed its preliminary work and was ready to submit its report.
Bolarinwa also stressed the determination of the Commission to ensure that the family belt was 100% Nigerian content, in recognition of the primary place of content in broadcasting, “which will become even more crucial when we go digital.”
