MTN Nigeria is set to kick off this year’s 21 Days of Y’ello Care, an annual MTN Group-wide staff volunteerism initiative that gets its staff to ‘roll up their sleeves’ to give back to the society for 21 days in June.
The theme of this year’s campaign is “Investing in Education for All”. It would run from June 1 to 21.
While the programme will be officially flagged-off by MTN board of directors led by Dr. Pascal Dozie, chairman, and MTN executives, led Mr. Brett Goschen, chief executive officer, will on Monday June 3 hold the Y’ello Book Fair, where staff and guests will be encouraged to buy educational materials for at least one child to be distributed in various public schools. There was also a visit to SOS Village, Isolo, Lagos on Saturday June 1st by MTNers where top Management Executives of MTN mentored and inspired the children.
With education as the focus, for 21 days, MTNers will seize the opportunity to go to select schools in Lagos and across the regions - Abuja and Port Harcourt to once again seek to inspire and empower Nigeria’s future leaders and contribute to making significant and lasting change by Investing in Education for All!
This year, the initiative is organised under three broad themes: Empowering Teachers, Empowering Learning and Digital Content for Education.
Specific activities would include the hosting of ICT seminars for teachers, actual classroom teaching, ICT awareness workshops, and the establishment of digital libraries in select secondary/primary schools across the country to promote a healthy, voluntary study habit among students.
This is besides the cleaning exercises in schools, donation of audio and hardcopy books and among others that would be taking place during this period.
Other activities for the 21 Days of Y’ello Care include learners-to-leaders initiative where Senior Management staff will be encouraged to mentor primary and secondary school students on their desired career paths; Who Wants to be an ICT Icon (WWTBAII), an ICT quiz structured after the popular Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, aimed at driving ICT awareness among students; and voluntary donations through the Y’ello Baskets, which will be placed in all MTN offices for staff to drop books, educational items and other learning materials. The items will be donated to special schools/orphanages across the country.
“In view of the approaching deadline for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, it has become imperative that all stakeholders collaborate with the government in its bid to accelerate the delivery of quality education for all,” said Akinwale Goodluck, Corporate Services Executive, MTN Nigeria.
“There is no better time than now to achieve this objective and MTN Nigeria as a responsible and responsive organization that we are known to be over the years, we are moved by our compassion and love for the Nigerian child to create an ICT environment that is conducive for him/her to play and learn and have access to contemporary learning tools” he added.
